Potter to the Royal Lymington Yacht Club

Report on Potter to the Royal Lymington Yacht Club

After several days of guessing what the weather would be like for our Potter to Lymington, we were kept guessing all day. Having discussed towing options and several members coming prepared with outboards just in case, the wind came up with enough puff, just in the nick of time to allow the fleet a gentle run down to Oxey, where we waited for RLYC to come out to meet us.

It was a perfect day and such a wonderful sight to see our 9 scows and 1 LR Pram mixed in with a similar number from our hosts. The combined fleet sailed into the river in a very orderly line, keeping to the port side to avoid any chance of meeting the ferry, only to find a large motor boat apparently oblivious to their presence. Thankfully everyone downed mains and arrived on the pontoon without any incidents and were met by our hosts for lunch in their clubhouse.

Much chat, a few drinks and a sandwich and soup lunch was all achieved at a relaxed pace before getting back to our boats - to find there was no wind at all. We had been expecting the wind to pick up for the sail home, instead those without outboards were towed all the way out and about half way back to Keyhaven. Finally there seemed to be a breeze so they were released to enjoy actually sailing back home. After 5 minutes the wind dropped again and the fleet made their way using the total stream, outboards, paddles, tows from other scows, the pram and the support boats. Some "noble" sailors made it back unaided thus avoiding the congestion on the shore back at the Club. So, in summary, we had a lovely day out, with a little gentle sailing and a lot of fun and excellent company. Those with electric outboards got to test their range enough to know it will get you back from Lymington at least! Those who haven't been towed in a line before got a go at that and those of us who hadn't done an OOD duty before got to do this, with the support of an extremely experienced and knowledgeable team.

My thanks go to our excellent hosts at RLYC, especially Vince who was so helpful in advising and helping us get away in our becalmed situation. Thanks to everyone for a brilliant day, with special thanks to Janet, Jo, David, Peter and Nick for all your advice and suggestions through the day and to everyone for being such a great group of club mates.
