The Potter to Yarmouth and up the Yar

Baling and Sailing - The Potter to Yarmouth and up the Yar

If ever there was a Potter that illustrated that you need to be two up in a scow - today was the day.

7 of us set off from Keyhaven this morning, 6 scows and a Lymington River Pram, with 2 ribs in attendance. We had a very pleasant sail over with just enough wind, and sun - a lovely sail. We then had to pick up buoys off Yarmouth whilst we waited for the ferry to leave. We were then met by YSC who escorted us into the harbour. As it was early in the season we were allowed to sail in, a short wait for the bridge, which they opened early for us.

We picked up the buoys off YSC whilst we waited for them to launch their boats. We then sailed up the Yar to the bridge. It is a beautiful river to sail up but the wind was all over the place, and we were not too sure how close to the banks we could get.

Back to YSC for our picnic lunch and to use their facilities - they really did us proud by appearing with a tray full of cakes - much appreciated - thank you YSC.

The sail back was a different story, the wind had got up considerably and there was a spring ebb against it! Choppy does not begin to describe it and all our crew were hard put to keep up with the water coming in. A most exhilarating sail - but we got back to Keyhaven in time to catch the bar!!

Many, many thanks to Mike for organising and Peter, Eric and Sally for guiding so well in the ribs - and all of you for coming and making it such a good day - a first potter for some and more a baptism of flood than fire!

I just have a couple of photos at present; I will post more on Facebook as they come in.
