Junior Sailing - Saturday 8th June
Published 10:56 on 10 Jun 2024
Another fabulous Junior Sailing Session on Saturday! Weather wasn't quite so lovely, but it certainly was great for sailing.
Report by Richard Erskine: Junior Sailing this week was made up of:
- 21 children on the water
- 23 supporting parents
- 9 club dinghies (4 Zests, 2 Qubas, 3 Teras)
- 15 knots of wind
- 1 capture the flag game on the water
- 0 rays of sunshine but 0 capsizes!
Under the first grey skies of the Junior year, the westerly wind gave the children a fairly brisk sail off the slipway and reach down the length of the river.
On the approach to Hurst castle, two buoys were laid, and on each buoy was mounted a small removable flag. On a whistle, the boats then made for a buoy to retrieve the flag. However, getting there first didn't necessarily guarantee the flag was yours if it was out of reach! Many a dinghy could only watch as, having missed the buoy, or drifted away and become stuck in irons agonisingly short, another boat came in from behind and plucked the flag clean from the buoy!
The westerly then held nicely for a sailing return to the slipway and a welcome hot shower!
The Juniors showed great support and trust in each other on a morning with a bit more breeze on than previously, and particularly in those boats with a mix of familiarity.
The initiative of those Juniors who thought to stash a biscuit in their buoyancy aid pocket, for any moment of need later down the river, also has to be admired!
Thank you to the organisers and support boat crews as always, and to Tom & Jenny for the photographs.
