Potterers

Welcome to the Potterers

Although the Potterers generally sail Scows, all classes of dinghies are welcome.

We "potter" both locally around the river and creeks and also organise more adventurous trips around the Solent, to Lymington, Alum Bay, up the River Yar, Newtown Creek etc. Some of these long-distance potters are held together with HCSC. We are also welcome to join in with HCSC on their local potters, which generally take place on Wednesdays.

Long Distance Potters

The dates for all the long potters are in the club calendar, sometimes with alternative dates to give some flexibility to take account of the weather. A PDF is also available via the WhatsApp group or from sailing@keyhavenyc.co.uk. Starting times and details will be posted on Facebook and in the WhatsApp group and this section of the website nearer the date. Long Potters require both a helm and crew and both must be over 18.

Please note that most of these longer potters are usually 'all day' events, so a picnic is generally required, as well as the ability to anchor your boats off the beach. You will need to be two in a boat as it is difficult to bail and sail when the weather gets rough as it often does on a return leg with wind against tide.

These potters are supported by the volunteers on club ribs and we are always keen for Potterers to help with safety boat duties. There are a lot of opportunities to get training for both RYA Powerboat 2 and Safety Boat, as well as refreshers and updates at the club.

Local Potters

Our local potters will take place most weeks. These are not supported by ribs and are really just social sailing in the river and creeks. Information on tides and weather will be put up on Facebook and on the WhatsApp Potterers Group on Sunday nights with a suggestion as to the best day to sail. This system has worked well for the last 2 years so we have decided to stick with it as it allows us to make best use of good weather.

Get Sailing Group

The Get Sailing Group (GSG) will be running again in 2024, please check the calendar for dates, these are generally Saturdays and Tuesday evenings, depending on the tides. We think this will also appeal to Potterers, especially those who are new to the area and who would feel happier to have some guidance and the opportunity to sail in company. It is also ideal for those who cannot get away on weekdays.

Keeping in touch

There is a WhatsApp group for Potterers and for GSG. This is used mainly for helms wanting crew, and general crew availability and sharing pottering photos. To keep WhatsApp traffic down to a minimum please use 'private message' once a crew arrangement has been made. WhatsApp is also used to organise the weekly local potters, so if you would like to join this group please see below.

For more information, or to be added to the WhatsApp group, please contact sailing@keyhavenyc.co.uk. There is also a KYC Facebook group (Keyhavenyc) where information on up and coming events, photos and pottering reports can be found.
