Welcome to the Potterers.

Although the Potterers generally sail Scows, all classes of dinghies are welcome.

We "potter" both locally around the river and creeks and also organise more adventurous trips around the Solent, to Lymington, Alum Bay up the River Yar, Newtown Creek etc. Some of these long-distance potters are held together with HCSC. We are also welcome to join in with HCSC on their local potters, which generally take place on Wednesdays.

Our long-distance potters (listed below) are on the club calendar, often with two alternative dates to give some flexibility to take account of the weather. These potters are supported by the club ribs and require helms to be reasonably experienced and to register in advance. Also, all boats should have both helm and crew as sailing in the Solent can often require bailing and it is difficult to sail and bail!

Our local potters will take place most weeks. These are not supported by ribs and are really just social sailing in the river and creeks. This year, we will be starting on Sunday May 1st 2022. Information on tides and weather will be put up on this section, Facebook and on the WhatsApp Potterers Group on Sunday nights with a suggestion as to the best day to sail. This system has worked well for the last 2 years so we have decided to stick with it as it allows us to make best use of the good weather.

Once again, we are running the Get Sailing Group on some Saturdays (please check the calendar). We think this will also appeal to Potterers, especially those who are new to the area and who would feel happier to have some guidance and the opportunity to sail in company. It is also ideal for those who cannot get away on weekdays. This year we are hoping to have some informal race nights on some Tuesdays - info will be on the Get Sailing WhatsApp.

Last year we started a WhatsApp group for Potterers, mainly as a means by which helms wanting crew, and crews who were available could get in touch with one another and share pottering photos. To keep traffic down to a minimum I would ask you to 'private message' one another for personal details or meetings. As stated, it is also used to organise the weekly potters so if you would like to join this group please see below.

For more information or to be put on the WhatsApp group please contact Jo Edwards - pottering Captain or contact

Starting times and details will be posted on Facebook and this section of the website nearer the date. Please note that most of these longer potters are usually 'all day' events so a picnic is generally required, as well as the ability to anchor your boats off the beach. Also, you need to be two in a boat as it is difficult to bail and sail when the weather gets rough.
