Powerboating Courses

1025927 orig

We offer courses all year round on club boats and can occasionally arrange for own-boat tuition if required. Expect to spend most of the time on your course afloat - these are practical courses, after all!

A copy of the G20 (the RYA Powerboat Scheme Syllabus and Logbook) is available to purchase separately from the office at a cost of £7. This gives you an idea of what to expect, and is useful for keeping track of your hours and miles covered on powerboats, It also gives further insight into other courses in the RYA powerboat scheme.

RYA Powerboat Level 1

Duration: 1 day

Max. students/instructor: 3:1, usually run as 2:1

Cost: £120

The Level 1 Start Powerboating course provides a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats.

No previous experience is required for this course, which we would usually recommend for under 16s who are learning to drive a powerboat for the first time, before they later progress to Level 2.

It covers boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment.

The course is likely to be conducted in one of the club's RIBs, and the certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

Check the here for the latest dates available or email sailing@keyhavenyc.co.uk to check availability and/or join the waiting list.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

Duration: 2 days

Max. students/instructor: 3:1, usually run as 2:1

Cost: £240 (£120 of which is refunded on request after 4 support boat duties are completed)

The Level 2 powerboat course provides the skills and background knowledge needed as a competent powerboat driver and forms the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. No prior experience is required for this course, and we would recommend adults move straight to Level 2, as this includes and builds on much of the content of Level 1.

It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats, focusing on low speed and close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed and the collision regulations.

The course is likely to be conducted in one of the club's RIBs, and the certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

Students will be provided with a copy of the RYA Start Powerboating book.

RYA Safety Boat

Duration: 2 days

Max. students/instructor: 6:1 across two boats

Cost: £75

This two-day course teaches the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, whether racing, training or pottering.

It includes tuition on rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying.

As the demands on a safety boat crew can vary, you must be prepared to enter the water at some point during this course.

It is strongly recommended that a member of a safety boat crew should hold a first aid certificate (or should have experience of first aid).

Students will be provided with a copy of the RYA Safety Boat Handbook.

Check the here for the latest dates available or email sailing@keyhavenyc.co.uk to check availability and/or join the waiting list.

RIB Handling / Practical Support Boat Refresher

Duration: ½ day

Max. students/instructor: 4:1, usually run as 2:1

Cost: Free

For those who have already completed a Level 2 or Safety Boat course, we offer refreshers to help give more confidence and blow away the cobwebs, as well as an informal opportunity to learn new skills.

These courses are tailored to the participants on the day, but generally include practice of skills such as:

  • Leaving / coming alongside
  • Picking up a mooring buoy/racing mark
  • Man overboard
  • Capsize recovery
  • Lee shore rescue
  • Towing

If none of the dates for our scheduled refreshers suit then please do get in touch with the office, as we can likely put on additional sessions with a minimum of 2-3 participants.

Check the here for the latest dates available or email sailing@keyhavenyc.co.uk to check availability and/or join the waiting list.
