Potterers - Newtown Creek (joint potter with HCSC)

Joint Long-Distance Potter with HCSC to Newtown Creek Tuesday 2 August

This will be an all-day trip with a stop for about an hour on the beach in Newtown after a short sail up the creek. Hopefully there will be some seals and maybe even a White-tailed Eagle to see in addition to the rather lovely scenery.

09:30: Briefing with boats and crew ready to launch straight after

12:00ish-13:50: Time in Newtown

16:30: Return at Keyhaven

It's about 6 miles to Newtown and usually takes around 1½ hrs to sail there. However, the return is often quite challenging due to tide over wind (which is usually stronger in the afternoon) and will probably take over 2hrs. This means that all dinghies taking part must have a helm and crew and should be able to reef the sail before leaving Newtown as this is likely to be needed.

Although there will be support boats accompanying the dinghies, participants must accept responsibility for their own safety and that of their boat and crew. They should be confident of their ability and the seaworthiness of their boat to manage the choppy sea state often encountered in the wind over tide conditions on the return trip. Having said that, it is an excellent opportunity for those with less experience to take part as crew.

Remember to bring your picnic for lunch, plenty of water to stay hydrated, hat and sun cream for UV protection, waterproof/appropriate clothing for the return journey and your VHF radio if you have one.
