The RYA Dinghy Instructor course is designed for experienced sailors looking to get involved in teaching others to sail. This course will equip you with the skills to instruct RYA Dinghy Levels 1-3, Youth Sailing Scheme Stages 1-4, Seamanship Skills and Day Sailing, while also developing your ability to handle small powerboats and manage teaching in various conditions.
Included in the course price is a Keyhaven YC taster membership for those not already members of the club, allowing access to training facilities and excellent-value dinghy hire during the temporary membership period if needed.
Eligibility Requirements:
To attend the course, candidates must be aged 16 or over, and meet the following prerequisites:
- RYA Powerboat Level 2
- RYA First Aid Certificate
- RYA Dinghy Instructor Pre-Entry Sailing Assessment
- RYA Safe & Fun Safeguarding Certificate (Online course)
We recommend ensuring that you are at the level of advanced sailing courses such as RYA Seamanship Skills and RYA Sailing with Spinnakers, as these skills will be tested during the pre-entry assessment.
Course Overview:
The course itself focuses on both the practical and technical aspects of teaching dinghy sailing in singlehanded and doublehanded dinghies. You will learn to plan and deliver sessions, manage groups of students, and ensure safety on the water. The training will cover teaching techniques for beginners to intermediate sailors, including handling a variety of weather conditions and teaching specific RYA courses.
Successful Completion:
Upon successful completion of the course, you'll be qualified to teach the RYA Dinghy Adult Scheme Levels 1-3, Youth Sailing Scheme Stages 1-4, Day Sailing, Seamanship Skills and Sailing with Spinnakers (if suitably experienced and approved by the Principal or Chief Instructor).
