RYA Stage 4 in the youth sailing scheme is all about honing skills and learning to sail a doublehanded boat as crew or helm. It builds on existing sailing skills and covers theoretical topics like weather in more detail, as well as more practical manoeuvres on the water.

Course Contents

  • Rigging & Launching - Can rig different boats, launch, and recover in various conditions.
  • Boat Handling - Can sail a crewed dinghy as helm and crew, with refined tacking, gybing, and sail trim.
  • Stronger Wind Skills - Can control speed in moderate conditions, balance the boat and perform capsize recovery with crew.
  • Advanced Sailing Theory - Can apply the five essentials and show understanding of basic racing tactics and right-of-way rules.
  • Seamanship & Safety - Can perform man overboard recovery and come alongside a moored boat or pontoon.
  • Decision-Making - Can adapt sailing techniques based on conditions and weather awareness.

    RYA Stage 3 or equivalent

    Minimum age

    Tends to be suitable for those over 10 years, but a minimum of 8 years.
