The RYA Day Skipper Theory Course is designed for anyone who has a basic boating knowledge and wants to undertake further training in order to become a safe and competent skipper. Successful completion of the course and the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course qualifies students for their International Certificate of Competence (ICC), allowing them to confidently plan and complete passages in familiar waters and charter boats in the UK and abroad.
You’ll gain the essential background knowledge required to skipper a small vessel safely by day in familiar waters. The course provides the theoretical foundation needed to understand navigation seamanship and safety, ensuring that you’re well prepared for the practical challenges of skippering, whether plotting a coastal route or returning to a welcoming port after a day on the water.
We recommend (although not essential) a minimum of 5 days or 100 nautical miles of tidal waters boating experience as an active crew member.
The course is split over 40 hours of tuition, spread across a number of weeks. It is highly recommended you make sure that you are able to attend all sessions in the series before booking.Subjects covered include:
- Seamanship
- Coastal navigation and pilotage
- Chartwork
- Electronic charts
