Junior & Youth Regatta - Saturday 16th September
Published 12:34 on 18 Sep 2023
Saturday 16th September saw our younger sections take to the water in their Regatta day. With favourable weather for the youngsters, the Salterns, Juniors & Youth all did fantastically well.
Salterns:
For the Salterns sailors it was their first time on the river. They had their own support boat and sailed from the slipway around a buoy going further and further each time. They did amazingly well and came away with huge confidence. Well done Harriet, Alex, Aggie & Alannah!
Juniors:
For the majority of the Juniors it was their first race. Mark Jardine did a great brief where he made sure they all understood where the start line was, what the prestart sequence of flags and horns would be, what the course was and was very clear that they could ask the support boats for advice or directions at any point.
They sailed the same 2 courses as the Youths. The first course was inside the river. The second went out Hawkers back in the the river and up the main channel. The tack out Hawkers was challenging because the tide was against them. However, with a little assistance in some cases, all boats completed both courses.
Mark Jardine made great use of his hooter and ensured that all sailors got celebrated for crossing the line.....which they loved. The hooter was also used for the Salterns sailors which was very exciting for them.
1st B Ward
2nd E O'Connor and E Garfath
3rd F Erskine and M Mellor
Youth:
The Youth section was competitive and the start to Race 2 would have challenged our adult racers! Congratulations to Gabriel in his Laser 4.7 for coming first, Henry & Alex in their Vibe X in second place, and Matthew with a Laser Radial in third. A great day of racing.
