A Blustery but Brilliant Start to GSG Sailing

Published 14:07 on 20 Apr 2026

Last Tuesday evening saw a fantastic turnout of 13 boats on the water, with a lively mix of scows, Zests and Lasers making for a colourful and varied fleet.

The evening began with a really useful and engaging refresher from Ian Sanderson, who shared some key sailing techniques along with helpful rigging guidance for those new to scow sailing. It was the perfect way to set everyone up for the session ahead.

Sailors then teamed up, pairing less experienced helms with more seasoned hands, before launching for an enjoyable sail. As the fleet took to the water, the breeze began to build, with gusts reaching around 20 knots. With conditions becoming more challenging, the decision was made to stay within the shelter of the river rather than head out into the Solenta choice that proved both sensible and appreciated.

Despite a low tide catching a few out on the mud (with excellent support from the safety boats), spirits remained high and everyone enjoyed a rewarding hour on the water in fresh conditions.

The evening rounded off perfectly with a well-earned drink back at the club, giving everyone a chance to relax and share stories from the water.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable and successful first GSG eveninghere's to many more to come! Thank you to all who volunteered to help make the evening run safely.
