Record-Breaking Paddle Brings 55 Kayaks to Keyhaven Marshes

Published 15:26 on 14 May 2026

A spectacular flotilla of 55 kayaks took to the water from KYC last Thursday evening (7th May) in what organisers believe could be a local record for the number of paddlers exploring the beautiful waterways of Keyhaven Marshes together.

The special event welcomed visiting members from Highcliffe Sailing Club for a guided paddle through some of the area's most scenic and wildlife-rich creeks. Participants explored North Passage, Pandora's Lake, Hope Creek and ZigZag, enjoying stunning views and calm conditions along the way.

The group was also treated to a memorable appearance from resident seal "Sammy" and several of his companions, delighting paddlers as they made their way through the marshes.

In total, the flotilla completed just under four miles on the water, with the adventure culminating in a group photograph beside Hurst Castle a fitting memento of the occasion and perhaps the benchmark for future record attempts.

Following the paddle, participants returned to the clubhouse to enjoy a traditional tea of sandwiches and homemade refreshments kindly supplied by our members, alongside some well-earned drinks from the bar.

Event organiser, Matt Tatnell, described the day as a fantastic success, celebrating not only the beauty of the Keyhaven Marshes but also the strong friendship between local sailing and paddling communities.

"We were thrilled with the turnout and the atmosphere throughout the evening," said Matt. "It was wonderful to share our creeks, wildlife and hospitality with our friends from Highcliffe Sailing Club. Seeing 55 kayaks on the water together was a truly impressive sight."
